Learning Morgan Silver Dollars

A brief introduction from our team

The Morgan Silver Dollar was first struck in 1878 in Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco, with Denver joining for the final year of production in 1921. The first Morgan struck at Philadelphia in 1878 had a famous error — an eight-tail-feather eagle, quickly restruck to seven feathers after collectors objected, marking the beginning of the Morgan error-coin legacy.

San Francisco has remained the most prestigious of the U.S. Mints since it opened on April 3rd, 1854, producing some of the most beautiful examples of U.S. minted coins. Many Morgan dates — including 1893-S, 1894-P, 1893-O, 1889-CC, and 1895-S — are prized today because so few were preserved in high Mint State or Proof condition.

The Pittman Act of 1918 led to the destruction of over 270 million Morgan Silver Dollars, nearly half of all Morgans struck over the coin's 28-year production run — which is why certain key dates remain so difficult to find today. The Morgan Silver Dollar remains the single most collected coin in the world.
